Seasons in Australia

Australia's seasons are opposite to China and the Northern Hemisphere. Summer: December-February (hot). Autumn: March-May (mild). Winter: June-August (cool-cold). Spring: September-November (warm). However, climate varies dramatically by city. Sydney winters are mild (8-17°C), Melbourne is colder (6-14°C) with more rain, Brisbane is subtropical (warm year-round), and Perth has a Mediterranean climate.

What to Wear

Summer: Light cotton or linen clothing, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 50+). Thongs (flip-flops) are standard casual footwear. Autumn: Layers — mornings can be cool, afternoons warm. Light jacket. Winter: Sydney: medium jacket, jumper. Melbourne: warm coat, scarf, umbrella. Brisbane: light layers (rarely below 10°C). Spring: Unpredictable — layers recommended. Melbourne can experience four seasons in one day.

Sun Safety (Critical!)

Australia has the highest skin cancer rate in the world due to proximity to the ozone hole. UV radiation is extreme from September to April. Always: wear SPF 50+ sunscreen (reapply every 2 hours), wear a hat and sunglasses outdoors, seek shade between 10am-3pm, and teach children sun safety from day one. Sunburn can occur in just 15 minutes on a high UV day. Many Chinese migrants underestimate Australian sun intensity — even people with darker skin tones need protection.

Extreme Weather

Bushfires (summer): Download the Fires Near Me app. Have an emergency plan. On catastrophic fire danger days, leave early. Floods: Heavy rain events are increasing. Never drive through floodwater. Cyclones (northern Australia): Season November-April. Follow BOM warnings. Heatwaves: Temperatures above 40°C occur in most capital cities. Stay hydrated, use air conditioning, check on elderly neighbours.
